Vehicle manufacturers do not make it easy. Increasingly, vehicles include electronic components which are VIN-designated and cannot be replaced or repaired without access to unlocking codes available only through vehicle manufacturers. Independent shops were originally refused access to those codes. Several states have passed or have pending legislation to force manufactures to make programming and analysis data available to after-market repair facilities. While we understand the manufacturers’ logic which is related to security, anti-theft protections, and the need to ensure that the persons repairing their vehicles’ know what they are about, we also applaud the repair industry’s efforts to force information access. We fully expect that there will be a shake out among repair shops over the next decade and many will go out of business due to an inability to keep up.
